Republic group begins fund-raising campaign
Republic Community Services (RCS) has launched its 2008-2009 fund-raising campaign, which will celebrate 50 years of serving the community and others in need. The group's goal this year is to raise $14,000.
This year's projects include helping to fund the purchase of new computers for the Republic-Michigamme School, school/public library, school band and chorus, and the teen center.
RCS also supports local youth activities such as basketball and church camps, scholarships, the elementary swimming program, Girl Scouts, and a children's, Christmas party. RCS also helps people in distress due to illness, fire and spouse abuse. The elderly and shutins receive Christmas food baskets, and donations are made to help fund the community picnic and other local activities.
The group was chartered in 1958 through the United Way of Michigan and has since operated as a charitable organization. All members serve voluntarily and receive no fees, or wages. New members are welcome.
Of all donations received, 70 percent are used for the Republic area, local activities and emergency situations. The remaining 30 percent is disbursed to other charitable organizations on a county, state and national level such as United Way of Michigan, Ishpeming Cancer Society, St.Vincent DePaul, Bay Cliff Health Camp, Salvation Army, Ishpeming Commission on Aging, Habitat for Humanity, Harbor House and others.
The board of directors includes president Carol Nicholas; vice president Joan Antilla; secretary Diane Perry; treasurer Ethel Valenzio; Tammy Kaminen, distress; and-Donna Venn, sunshine.
